THE LOWDOWN
SYDNEY SIXERS
- Reigning champions Sydney Sixers got off to a losing start in defence of their title as they were beaten by Hobart Hurricanes in their opening encounter and their inability to limit their opponents posting a good total ultimately cost them.
- The Sixers had no real trouble taking wickets but they failed to stem the flow of runs being scored as the Hurricanes posted 178/8 and despite a second-wicket partnership of 116 from Jack Edwards (47) and James Vince (67), they fell 16 runs short of their target.
- The quality of the top three for the Sixers can mix it with anyone on their day but it was their middle order that failed to deliver in their first match and that is an area they will have to improve on if they wish to get off the mark here.
MELBOURNE RENEGADES
- Melbourne Renegades made a strong start to their BBL|10 campaign as they were comfortable victors over Perth Scorchers and they will be eager to carry on the momentum built in that contest as they face a short turnaround.
- Having bowled the Scorchers out for 130 with Josh Lalor and Kane Richardson taking three wickets apiece, the Renegades made light work of their chase as they hit their target with 21 balls to spare.
- Opening pair Shaun Marsh and Aaron Finch did the damage as they combined for 70 to set the tone for the innings but Marsh was the key man with 62 from 47 balls and the Renegades eased their way to victory with plenty in hand.
THE PREDICTION
These two teams both got off to a contrasting start to BBL|10 and the Sydney Sixers will have a task on their hands to get off the mark as they take on Melbourne Renegades. The Sixers were beaten by Hobart Hurricanes as they failed to chase down a big total and unless they can improve with the ball, this could be a second straight loss. The Renegades were comfortable winners over Perth Scorchers as they performed well with both bat and ball and with confidence high after that success, the Melbourne outfit can build on that impressive showing to make it back-to-back wins.
