THE LOWDOWN
PERTH SCORCHERS
- Perth Scorchers made a huge statement with an extremely impressive victory over reigning champions Sydney Sixers and with three successive wins behind them, they will hope to notch another eye-catching victory against top of the ladder Sydney Thunder.
- Colun Munro hit 50 from 34 but it was the knock from Mitch Marsh which really caught the eye as he produced a sensational effort of 57 runs from just 27 deliveries which helped the Scorchers to a total of 183/4.
- The Scorchers removed Josh Philippe and James Vince early on and when Daniel Hughes fell with the Sixers on 44, Perth were able to take regular wickets on the back of that as they skittled the Sydney side for just 97 to claim an 86-run success.
SYDNEY THUNDER
- Sydney Thunder put their shock defeat to Brisbane Heat behind them as they made an immediate return to winning ways by seeing off a potentially dangerous Hobart Hurricanes outfit in impressive fashion.
- Usman Khawaja (49), Alex Ross (44*) and Ben Cutting (31*) all made solid contributions to help the Thunder to 167/5 but it was their efforts with the ball that were arguably more notable.
- Facing a strong top six in the order, the Thunder bowled well as a unit with Nathan McAndrew, Chris Green and Tanveer Sangha all chipping in with two wickets apiece as they helped to reduce the Hurricanes to just 128/8, leaving them 39 runs short.
THE PREDICTION
Perth Scorchers remain outside of the top five on the ladder but having won three games in a row, they are beginning to place pressure on the teams ahead of them and this will be another fascinating test for them. The Scorchers outplayed reigning champions Sydney Sixers in a dominating performance last time out and they will hope to build on that against a Sydney Thunder outfit that top the ladder. The Thunder have won six of their last seven matches but this will be a tough task for them with both teams possessing plenty of talent on their roster. Tanveer Sangha has been a revelation with the ball for the Thunder with 15 wickets, making him the leading wicket-taker in the competition at the time of writing and with plenty of support with both bat and ball, the Sydney side have the tools to cause problems for any side. The Scorchers started slowly but have scored over 180 runs in their last two as well as bowling both opposing teams out and that kind of performance once again here can see them cause an upset. This game could genuinely go either way but it is the home side that can edge a contest where plenty of runs are scored.
