Casper Ruud returns to the tour after a six week absence due to a knee injury. He last competed at the French Open, where an ailing Ruud fell to a four set loss to Nuno Borges in round two. That injury will have been a huge blow to the Norwegian, who excels on the clay and won his first Masters 1000 earlier this year in Madrid. He will hope to get off to a winning start as he aims for a third title in Gstaad.
Dominic Stricker will be his opponent after he recovered from a poor opening to his first-round match to defeat Pierre-Hugues Herbert 4-6 6-4 6-2. The 22-year-old has not been in the best of form over the past few months but this was a fine way to begin his campaign at one of his home events.
He also leads the head-to-head against Ruud, having beaten the three-time Grand Slam finalist 6-4 3-6 7-6 in Basel two years ago. Nevertheless, this will be their first meeting on clay. He may get off to a slow start, having been out of the game for some time, but Ruud will enjoy these conditions and should make a winning return.
