Birkirkara finished fifth in the Maltese Premier League last season, but they managed to squeeze into those top five spots on the final day of the campaign. The four-time Maltese champions haven’t played in Europe since the 2023/24 season when they were beaten by Maribor in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Europa Conference League.
They now face a Petrocub Hincesti side that, coached by Georgian manager Shota Makharadze, managed to reach the league phase of the UEFA Europa Conference League last season, but they collected just two points from games against Pafos, Jagiellonia, Rapid Vienna, Istanbul Basaksehir, Real Betis and Hearts.
Birkirkara will believe they can make things difficult for Petrocub in this first-leg at home, but the Moldovans would still have to be viewed as the favourites for the tie.
