THE TEAM NEWS

BARBADOS

  • Barbados are ranked 11 in the world and at their regional qualifier, they won every match bar one to qualify for this year’s World Cup so confidence is good even if they remain one of the outsiders participating this year.
  • Barbados could only record one win over Sri Lanka in their three group matches at the 2015 World Cup in Sydney so they will look to compete better here and this will be one match they are targeting to win.
  • Barbados have played in eight previous World Cups and their highest ever finish is sixth, which was way back in 1987 and they will aim to get a win under their belts in this opening match and try build on that confidence as they look to key goal keeper Shonette Azore-Bruce and captain Rhe-Ann Niles-Mapp for inspiration.

SINGAPORE

  • Singapore qualified for the 2019 Netball World Cup by finishing second behind Sri Lanka at the Asian Regional Qualifier in September but they face a major set up in quality when facing Barbados, Malawi and New Zealand in their group.
  • Singapore failed to record a win at the 2015 World Cup as they lost all three games and they finished bottom of their pool and it is difficult to see them troubling any of the teams in their group this time around too.
  • Singapore are currently ranked 26th in the world and their best positional finish was 8th in 1967 and it will be a tough ask to come anywhere close to that in Liverpool, but they will look to captain Charmaine Soh who is unquestionably their star player.

THE PREDICTION

Barbados and Singapore kick off their World Cup campaign and they are the two lowest-ranked teams in Group B. Barbados are ranked 15 places higher than Singapore in the world rankings and they should have enough quality to comfortably outscore the Asian side and win at the M&S Banks Arena.
