DAVID GOFFIN

  • David Goffin put in one of the performances of his career in his third-round match with 11th seed Daniil Medvedev, fighting back from a set down twice to come through in five sets.
  • 28-year-old Goffin is the 21st seed at this year’s Wimbledon and through to the round of 16 for the third time in six appearances.
  • The Belgian’s game is well-suited to grass and his fitness proved to be the deciding factor against his younger opponent Medvedev as he gears up to face 35-year old Fernando Verdasco for the seventh time.

FERNANDO VERDASCO

  • Fernando Verdasco put out the enigmatic Thomas Fabbiano in straight sets in the third round to make it through to the second week at Wimbledon for a fifth time.
  • The veteran Spaniard has a habit for getting out of tight spaces in this tournament and often breaks back immediately after a break of serve, showing a mental toughness honed from so long on the tour.
  • Verdasco shares a 3-3 head-to-head record with his next opponent David Goffin, with the pair winning once each in their last meetings in 2017, but this will be their first match on grass.

THE PREDICTION

This has all the hallmarks of an excellent game in the round of 16 between two quite different players. Verdasco has the wits to pull himself through tough situations, like his five-set comeback over Kyle Edmund, while Goffin’s play-style is a more elegant process and his fitness is at top ten standard. The Belgian won the previous meeting between the two, but they share a 3-3 record and have not met for two years now, with Verdasco having a mini renaissance this year at 35. David Goffin’s win over Medvedev could give him the confidence missing from his otherwise stellar game to help him reach the quarter-finals for the first time.
