THE TEAM NEWS
ROMANIA
- Romania will compete in the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship which is just their second appearance in the finals and the first time they have qualified in 21 years.
- The Romanians will head into the tournament having not lost a game in their qualifying campaign, securing seven wins and three draws whilst they only conceded four goals in their ten matches.
- Romania have opted to go with the players who were involved in qualifying with all 23 members of the squad having featured in those matches although Razvan Marin is a notable omission after he featured in the senior squad.
CROATIA
- Croatia will appear at the European Under-21 Championships for the first time in 15 years and will be seeking their first ever victory after failing to win any of their previous six matches.
- With just one defeat in qualifying, the Croatians will be confident of carrying that form over into the finals but a tough group lies in wait with the clash against Romania presenting their best chance of a win.
- Croatia have been hit by the unavailability of Marseille’s Duje Caleta-Car after his club wanted him to be ready for the start of pre-season but Alen Halilovic and Nikola Vlasic are two of their bigger names that can be called upon.
THE PREDICTION
Both Romania and Croatia are appearing at their first European Under-21 Championships for numerous years and will be looking to make an early impression. It is going to be an uphill task for both teams having been placed in a tough group alongside pre-tournament favourites England as well as France. Croatia have some star quality in their ranks and will fancy their chances of a win in their opening round but must be on their guard with Romania capable of pushing them all the way.
