THE TEAM NEWS

POLAND

  • Poland head into the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championships as big outsiders and have it all to do just to get out of Group A having been handed an extremely tough draw.
  • The Poles have been largely inactive since qualifying for this competition with just two friendlies to their name with a draw against England followed by a defeat by Serbia not ideal preparation.
  • In a further blow for Poland, one of their most exciting talents in Bartosz Kapustka will be missing through injury which will affect their creativity from the wing and may leave the Poles struggling to generate chances for captain Dawid Kownacki up front.

BELGIUM

  • Belgium would have fancied themselves to go deep in this tournament but have suffered a couple of injury setbacks as well as having been handed a tough group which may see them fall at the first hurdle.
  • The Belgians will have to overcome Poland as well as a couple of the pre-tournament favourites in Spain and Italy if they are to progress out of Group A but their preparation has been poor and that was compounded at the start of June when France beat them 3-0.
  • Zinho Vanheusden and Landry Dimata have been regulars for coach Johan Walem’s side but both have suffered knee injuries and will miss out but there is a first call-up for 17-year-old midfielder Yari Verschaeren.

THE PREDICTION

Poland and Belgium begin this tournament as outsiders with both having it all to do to just get out of the group stage. If either are to have any chance of progressing, they must get a win in this opening game with tougher contests lying in wait. Belgium come into the game as favourites with Poland big underdogs and they can live up to that tag which should give them some confidence ahead of what will be a crucial clash with Spain.
