THE TEAM NEWS

ITALY

  • Italy head into the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championships as one of the pre-tournament favourites due to the strength of their squad and they are capable of living up to that tag.
  • The Italians have been very active since the end of their qualifying campaign, playing no less than six times, but they only won one of those matches whilst they drew their two most recent games with Austria and Croatia.
  • Italy’s squad is littered with senior experience including Juventus’ Moise Kean who enjoyed a breakthrough season but Gianluigi Donnarumma is left out after establishing himself as the first choice for the senior side.

SPAIN

  • Having won this competition twice in the last ten years, Spain will be hoping they can live up to their billing as one of the favourites but face a tough test in a difficult Group A with an important game with Italy first up.
  • Spain have played four matches following the conclusion of the qualifiers with them collecting three wins and a draw along the way as they head into the tournament in decent form.
  • The Spaniards are able to name the player of the tournament from 2017 in Dani Ceballos whilst senior internationals Mikel Oyarzabal and Pablo Fornals are also called up but Barcelona’s Carles Alena is a surprising omission.

THE PREDICTION

This game could be pivotal for the chances of both nations with them both having the ability to win the competition but with just one side progressing automatically, the result of this game is likely to play a big role on which side qualifies for the knockout stages from Group A. Both have named strong squads with plenty of senior experience but with nerves likely to be on show due to the magnitude of this game, a draw could be on the cards.
