THE TEAM NEWS

ENGLAND

  • England were left devastated after their opening match on Tuesday evening when an own goal by Aaron Wan-Bissaka late in stoppage time gave France a 2-1 win after England had looked set for victory courtesy of an excellent goal in the 54th minute from Phil Foden.
  • In a very eventful match in which France failed to score from two penalties, England failed to hold on to their lead after Hamza Choudhury’s VAR red card for a terrible foul on Jonathan Bamba with just under 30 minutes remaining. France missed the resulting penalty but their pressure eventually told with the levelling goal in the 89th minute before Wan-Bissaka’s late own goal decided the match.
  • The defeat against France means that they face a real uphill task if they are to qualify for the semi-finals, with only the group winners and best placed runner-up from the three groups assured a place in the last four.

ROMANIA

  • Romania produced an excellent performance when defeating Croatia 4-1 in their debut match in the group stage at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship on Tuesday in San Marino.
  • Goals from Puşcaş and Hagi in the opening 15 minutes gave the Romanians control of the game and although Croatia pulled one back soon after, Romania always looked a threat on the break and were deserving of their victory.
  • Defensive solidity played a big part in Romania’s successful qualification campaign in reaching the finals and they showed more of the same in their opening match.

THE PREDICTION

England will have to quickly to pick themselves up from their late collapse against France as they face a buoyant Romanian team who are full of confidence after their emphatic victory against Croatia on matchday one. The pressure is on England; as pre-tournament favourites they were expected to challenge for the title but instead are clinging on to hopes of making it through to the semi-finals as the best placed runner-up. England are predicted to get the win in this game but expect Romania to make it very difficult for them in a close encounter.
