THE TEAM NEWS
USA
- The USA did not have everything their own way but ultimately proved too good for England as they edged their opponents to progress to the final of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup as they stand 90 minutes from defending their crown.
- Christen Press opened the scoring for the United States and despite England drawing level soon after, Alex Morgan scored her sixth goal of the tournament to put her side back in front but the USA were thankful to goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher after she kept her side ahead when saving a late penalty.
- The USA will be looking to win the competition for a fourth time and become just the second team to defend the trophy with their chances set to be boosted by the return of co-captain Megan Rapinoe after she missed the semi-final with a hamstring strain.
NETHERLANDS
- European champions Netherlands moved one game away from also becoming world champions as they saw off a valiant effort from Sweden in their Women’s World Cup semi-final contest.
- Neither side were able to break the deadlock in normal time so extra-time was needed with Jackie Groenen finding the back of the net with a good effort nine minutes into first half which was enough to seal the win.
- The Netherlands looked cagey in the game against the Swedes and they must also overcome any tiredness caused by playing 120 minutes with one fewer day for recovery although they could be boosted by Lieke Martens being available after she was substituted at half-time of the semi-final with a foot problem.
THE PREDICTION
The USA came into the Women’s World Cup as favourites and have lived up to those expectations throughout the tournament. However, they must defeat the Netherlands to make those expectations a reality and retain the title they won in 2015. The Netherlands could hold the title of both world and European champions if they can overcome the odds to defeat the United States but despite a superb effort so far this tournament, this could be a step too far with the USA determined to defend their title and they should be able to do just that.
