THE TEAM NEWS

CHINA

  • China bounced back from their opening loss to Germany in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup by defeating South Africa and give themselves a chance of progressing to the knockout stages.
  • They will face Spain in their final group game with the winners set to qualify whilst but a draw would leave South Africa in third place due to their inferior goal difference although that may still be enough to qualify.
  • Li Ying’s brilliant goal against the South Africans has given them a chance of progression and even a narrow loss in this final game could see them qualify from third place if other results go their way with the goalscorer and Yan Wang set to retain their places in the side.

SPAIN

  • Spain failed to make it back-to-back wins in the Women’s World Cup as the Spaniards fell to defeat against Germany in their second group game with their fate now resting on their final game with China.
  • Germany were able to see off Spain by a single goal but because of their superior goal difference, even a draw in their final Group B match will see the Spanish advanced to the last 16.
  • Nahikari Garcia was tasked with leading the line against Germany but failed to find the back of the net and that could see Jennifer Hermoso pushed into the more advanced role she had against South Africa.

THE PREDICTION

China and Spain meet in a shootout for the second qualifying spot from Group B after Germany already secured their place in the knockout stages. Spain can even afford a draw in this game due to their greater goal difference and that could play a part in the thinking of both coaches. China will have to be more attacking if the game is level towards the end of the game and that could see the Spanish catch them on the break and that will play into their hands with Spain set to earn the result they need to progress.
