THE TEAM NEWS

CANADA

  • Canada’s fine run of form continued as they earned a win in their opening contest of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup against Cameroon with the Canadians earning a narrow 1-0 victory.
  • Despite seeing 74% of the ball and getting 16 shots away on goal, Canada failed to be clinical with Kadeisha Buchanan’s goal on the stroke of half-time the difference between the two teams.
  • Canada looked nervous in their opening game but the win over Cameroon should settle them down ahead of this contest and they are likely to field an unchanged side although their attack-minded players will be under pressure to perform here.

NEW ZEALAND

  • New Zealand are still seeking a first win in the World Cup as their 2019 campaign started with a defeat as the Netherlands snatched a last-gasp victory with an injury-time winner to break the hearts of the Football Ferns.
  • Having worked tirelessly to keep the Dutch out, a 92nd minute goal by Jill Roord ruined all of their hard work and they will have to pick themselves up quickly as they face another tough game against Canada.
  • Annalie Longo will be pushing for a start after only featuring as a substitute against the Netherlands and her presence in midfield could be what New Zealand need as they look for their first win in a World Cup.

THE PREDICTION

Canada were far from their best in their World Cup opener against Cameroon but got the win they wanted and will look to make it two wins from two as they face New Zealand. The Football Ferns lost in heart-breaking fashion against the Netherlands but this will be another tough task for them. The Canadians have not lost any of their last nine matches and although New Zealand will give them a game, Canada should have enough to claim the win here.
