THE TEAM NEWS
VENEZUELA
- Venezuela will be hoping to qualify for their first World Cup in 2022 and the first step to preparing for their qualifying campaign will begin with the Copa America in Brazil this summer.
- The Venezuelans are the only South American side never to feature in a World Cup but will fancy their chances with their current side showing some great improvements recently with the highlight a 3-1 victory over Argentina in March.
- With a team full of exciting youngsters as well as more experienced players, spearheaded by Salomon Rondon on the back of a superb season in the Premier League and with some great balance to their side, they can go far in this tournament.
PERU
- Peru will be hoping to build on a promising World Cup campaign in which they pushed eventual winners France all the way but head coach Ricardo Gareca would have been hoping for more talent to add to his squad for this competition.
- The squad named for this tournament is very similar to the one that featured in Russia in 2018 and whilst the consistency in the squad is a positive, the lack of further talent is concerning whilst they have struggled for form since the World Cup with just three wins from ten matches.
- With 82 caps to his name, Yoshimar Yotun will be key for his side in the centre of midfield in the 4-2-3-1 system the Peruvians are likely to adopt but that formation may have to change if they fail to get off to a good start.
THE PREDICTION
Venezuela and Peru look quite evenly matched and this could turn into a superb Group A contest as both nations get their Copa America campaigns underway but Venezuela have enjoyed the better build-up and can earn the win in this one. They will be using this tournament as an ideal preparation for the World Cup qualifiers as they bid to progress to their first World Cup and they can do just that with a deep run but they must get off to a good start in this opening game.
