THE TEAM NEWS
ARGENTINA
- Argentina are in trouble of exiting the 2019 Copa America at the first hurdle as they suffered defeat in their opening match against Columbia and will have a job on their hands to turn their form around.
- In what was a tight game for long periods, Columbia did enough to win as Argentina faltered with two goals inside the final 20 minutes enough to consign the Argentines to a 2-0 defeat to get their competition off to the worst possible start.
- After a poor first half, Argentina did improve after the break thanks to the introduction of Rodrigo de Paul and he looks set to start this game but other changes will have to be made to get the best out of Lionel Messi.
PARAGUAY
- Paraguay threw away a two-goal lead as they were forced to settle for a draw against Qatar in their opening game of the Copa America but will fancy their chances against a vulnerable Argentina.
- Having taken the lead just four minutes in thanks to an own goal, substitute Derlis Gonzalez doubled his side’s lead 11 minutes into the second half but Qatar hit back with two goals in the final 25 minutes to take a point from the game.
- Gonzalez’s performance from the bench should ensure he earns a place in the starting XI over the man he replaced at the break against Qatar in Hernan Perez and he could play a key role alongside Miguel Almiron who will again be the chief playmaker for the Paraguayans.
THE PREDICTION
Argentina need to respond and quickly or they will face another disastrous tournament when they are trying to extinguish the memory of their last one. Paraguay lie in wait and will fancy their attacking unit to cause Argentina’s defence problems but they must be clinical in front of goal. They wasted numerous chances against Qatar and were punished as they were pegged back from two goals up to end with a draw. That outcome could be the same again here with Argentina failing to get out of the rut they find themselves in.
