THE TEAM NEWS

ARGENTINA

  • Argentina enter this competition still trying to recover from their shambolic showing in the 2018 World Cup and as a huge sign that they are still not quite right, they are yet to appoint a permanent replacement for Jorge Sampaoli.
  • Lionel Scaloni will remain in caretaker charge for the Copa America with this likely to be the final chance to prove he is worthy of the job but he must try and get a star-studded line-up performing better than they have in recent years.
  • Having failed to appear for Argentina until March following their disappointing World Cup campaign, Lionel Messi is back in the side and will be looking to earn his first senior title for his nation but the Argentinean defence still looks to be an issue.

COLOMBIA

  • Columbia came third in the last Copa America in 2016 having been eliminated by eventual winners Chile in the semi-final and head into this year’s edition on the back of some strong form.
  • Having been eliminated in the World Cup by England at the quarter-final stage, the Columbians have lost just one game since that defeat whilst they have won six of those eight fixtures.
  • Following an injury-hit World Cup and with his club future still to be decided, James Rodriguez will be keen to guide his side deep into this tournament with a lot resting on his shoulders as Columbia’s best and most important player.

THE PREDICTION

Argentina head into the Copa America with plenty of critics to answer after their performance at the 2018 World Cup but have yet to appoint a permanent manager with Lionel Scaloni in caretaker charge and they face a tough test against Columbia in their opening match. The Argentinean FA are apparently not keen on Scaloni taking over full-time which has put them in an awkward situation should they claim a record-equalling 15th Copa America title but their campaign might not get off to the best start with a draw possible in this one.
