THE TEAM NEWS
MEXICO
- Mexico are short-priced favourites alongside the United States to claim the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup with the team ranked 18th in the world set to prove difficult to beat in this competition.
- The Mexicans look to be the best side in Group A by far and should have no issues progressing to the knockout stages and they come into this tournament in good form having claimed wins in their last four matches.
- Mexico could have issues at the back but against some low-quality opponents that might not be an issue whilst they will fancy themselves to outscore anybody with Wolves’ Raul Jimenez leading the line.
CUBA
- Cuba have competed in nine of the last 12 Gold Cups and head into this year’s competition on the back of a solid CONCACAF Nations League qualifying campaign but they could come crashing back down to earth when they face Mexico in their Group A opener.
- The Cubans won three of their four matches in the Nations League qualifiers, seeing off Grenada, Dominican Republic and Bermuda before falling to a 2-1 defeat to Haiti in their final game.
- Luis Paradela and Yordan Santa Cruz will be crucial to Cuba’s chances of progressing to the knockout stage but with a lack of depth in their squad, they will need to be in top form to give them any chance.
THE PREDICTION
Mexico have every chance of winning the Gold Cup as they head into this competition with the best squad on paper with some real talent amongst their ranks. They face Cuba in their opening game of Group A in what should be a comfortable win but the pressure will be on the Mexicans to start well. Cuba are not likely to pose many problems as the team ranked 175th in the world do not possess a huge amount of talent and will be looking to limit the number of goals they concede.
