THE TEAM NEWS
MEXICO
- Mexico were brilliant as they laid down a marker at the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup with a thrashing over Cuba and will now face Canada in what is likely to be the battle to determine who progresses as Group A winners.
- The Mexicans wasted little time in getting the scoring under way with Uriel Atuna bagging the first of his hat-trick in just the second minute and he was ably supported thanks to a Raul Jimenez brace and a goal apiece from Diego Reyes and substitute Alexis Vega all contributing to the 7-0 rout.
- Mexico should see little reason to change their side after such a big win but did name a couple of players who would not necessarily be chosen in Mexico’s strongest team and they could come back in for the clash with Canada.
CANADA
- Canada enjoyed a comfortable win as they put four goals past Martinique in their opening game of Group A to get their Gold Cup campaign off to the perfect start but now face a big test against Mexico.
- Jonathan David scored his first of two goals to open the scoring in the 33rd minute before his second came eight minutes into the second half before Junior Hoilett and Scott Arfield completed the scoring in the 4-0 win.
- Canada were able to take Junior Hoilett and Alphonso Davies off to keep them fresh for this clash with John Herdman likely to name an unchanged side unless he opts for more defensive cover against the Mexicans.
THE PREDICTION
Mexico and Canada were both heavy scorers in the first round of group matches but know they face much stiffer opposition in their second game. Canada in particular will know they have a big job on their hands as they come up against the pre-tournament favourites. After scoring seven goals in their opening game, albeit against inferior opposition, Mexico set their stall out and nobody will want to face them as they possess so much attacking talent and that can prove too much for Canada.
