THE TEAM NEWS
CUBA
- Cuba were hammered by pre-tournament favourites Mexico as their 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign got off to the worse possible start with them facing a huge task to try and respond.
- The Cubans went behind in just the second minute with Mexico managing to make it 4-0 by the break and unfortunately for Cuba, they did not let up in the second half as they added a further three goals in the 7-0 rout.
- Although they were expected to get beat by Mexico, the manner of defeat will be alarming for them and Raul Mederos may be forced into changing his side as they look to bounce back with a win to keep their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages alive.
MARTINIQUE
- Martinique were competitive in spells but were unable to prevent Canada from condemning them to what was ultimately a one-sided defeat as they lost their opening match at the Gold Cup.
- Having managed to keep Canada at bay in the first half an hour, they finally opened the scoring in the 33rd minute and were able to add a further three in the second half with Martinique going down 4-0.
- Mario Bocaly will be proud of his team’s effort in their opener but he may still look to rotate his squad as he looks to give as many of them as possible some exposure in tournament football.
THE PREDICTION
Cuba and Martinique were both on the end of heavy defeats in their opening matches of the Gold Cup and both are left with an uphill battle to progress from Group A. Neither side can afford another defeat but this may come down to a mental battle and who can overcome their loss in the first game. Cuba were expected to lose to Mexico but the manner in which they lost will be hugely concerning and Martinique can capitalise on that to edge the win.
