THE TEAM NEWS

COSTA RICA

  • Costa Rica delighted their home fans with a 4-0 victory against Nicaragua at Estadio Nacional in San Jose as they made the perfect start to the match with a 7th-minute opener from Bryan Oviedo and added two more goals before half-time.
  • A standout performer for Costa Rica in their opening match win was FC Cincinnati's Allan Cruz who scored a world-class goal for Costa Rica’s fourth of the game and he also provided an assist for another of the goals.
  • The 4-0 win was a big boost of confidence to the team having had some indifferent results in the build-up to the tournament and they will want to further stamp their authority with another win here so they are expected to name their strongest available line-up once again.

BERMUDA

  • Bermuda’s first ever match at the CONCACAF Gold Cup ended in defeat as they lost 2-1 against Haiti despite having led 1-0 at half-time courtesy of a goal from Dante Leverock in first half stoppage time.
  • They were left to rue some promising positions they worked their way into during the first half only to fail to hit the target and during the second half they were unable to cope with the changes which Haiti made that ultimately took the game away from Bermuda.
  • The expectations are low for Bermuda ahead of this match against the best team in the group but they are likely to try and keep it tight during the first half to stay in the game as long as possible.

THE PREDICTION

Costa Rica were heavily fancied to top the group prior to the tournament starting and there is no reason to think otherwise after the first round of matches. They may face tougher tests than they did against Nicaragua but they should have enough quality to ensure they do not suffer an upset. Bermuda are enjoying the experience of the CONCACAF Gold Cup but they will have to wait for their first win as Costa Rica will be too strong.
