THE TEAM NEWS
NIGERIA
- Nigeria produced their best performance of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations as they came from behind to defeat Cameroon to progress to the quarter-finals where they will face South Africa.
- Odion Ighalo gave his side the lead inside the opening 20 minutes but a double from Cameroon left them behind at the break but Ighalo’s second was quickly followed up by Alex Iwobi as they held on to win.
- Following such a good performance, it is unlikely that Nigeria will make changes to their side although Samuel Chukwueze was brilliant from the bench and may have forced his way into the starting XI.
SOUTH AFRICA
- South Africa shocked host nation Egypt in what was a sensational result and has left Bafana Bafana dreaming of what they could achieve with a quarter-final against Nigeria lying in wait.
- With the scores level heading into the final five minutes of the game after neither side had managed to break the deadlock, Egypt committed plenty forward to an attack but were caught out on the counter as Thembinkosi Lorch fired in.
- The South Africans were able to hold on for a famous victory as they knocked out one of the favourites for the tournament and are set to field the same side as the one that conquered Egypt.
THE PREDICTION
In a tournament of shocks, South Africa defeating Egypt in the last 16 is right up there with the biggest as they advanced to the quarter-finals. They will meet three-time winners Nigeria for a place in the last-four and although they will again be underdogs, this competition has proven that anything can happen. South Africa will again play on the counter but they may struggle this time out with Nigeria able to advance.
