THE PREDICTION

Sometimes at the Winters Olympics and in life generally, it can feel at certain points like the stars are aligning in favour of a certain outcome. When it comes to Great Britain winning gold in the Women’s Curling, you’d be forgiven for thinking that they are destined to do exactly that when taking into account their journey so far to reach this stage. After entering the final clutch of round-robin games needing a win and other results to go their way, Team GB snuck into the semi-finals via the back door. Skip Eve Muirhead then put on a clinic, triumphing over opposite number Anna Hasselborg and leading Great Britain to a 12-11 win over reigning Olympic champions Sweden after an extra end, snapping their five-match win streak in the process. However, it would be a big mistake to write off Japan, who have certainly gained their place in the gold medal match on merit. After sneaking into the semi-finals with a 5-4 record alongside Great Britain, Japan caused arguably the shock of the entire event, beating round-robin winners Switzerland 8-6 in a superb performance to set up this final.

Whilst Great Britain overcame Japan comfortably in the round-robin stage, beating them 10-4 with two three-point ends the highlight, this won’t phase skip Satsuki Fujisawa and her team, who were defeated by Switzerland only the day before beating them in the semi-finals. Japan were bronze medallists in PyeongChang and know what it takes to win a pressure medal match. Despite that, it feels like fate for Great Britain when taking into account their journey to reach the final. Muirhead is playing at the very top of her game and their scoring power has gone to another level. Therefore, in what will no doubt be another memorable memorable occasion on the ice, Great Britain should be backed to win their first Olympic gold medal in Women’s Curling for 20 years.
