Tracy Cortez: Can the flyweight veteran rebound as a slight underdog?

Posting a record of 6-2 since joining the promotion, Tracy Cortez (12-3) has been a staple of the flyweight division since graduating to the UFC via the Contender Series back in 2019. While she has yet to earn a finish under the UFC banner, Cortez began life in the promotion with a five fight win streak and has only come up short against the elite of the division, dropping results to former strawweight champion, Rose Namajunas and Erin Blanchfield. She’s coming off a submission loss to the aforementioned Blanchfield at UFC 322, a result that saw her finished for the first time since a defeat in her professional debut.

Wang Cong: Will "The Joker" continue her surge up the UFC rankings?

A former kickboxer who just happens to hold a victory over current champion, Valentina Shevchenko, Wang Cong (9-1) has been extremely impressive since making the jump to MMA and the UFC. “The Joker” is 4-1 since joining the promotion, with an upset stoppage loss to Gabriella Fernandes serving as the only blip in her tenure. The Road to UFC veteran has improved from fight to fight, with her grappling coming on in leaps and bounds. While she has yet to score another stoppage since a highlight reel finish over Victoria Leonardo in her debut, she enters this bout off the back of an impressive decision victory over Eduarda Moura and ranked in the Top 10.

Tracy Cortez vs Wang Cong prediction

Cortez is often accused of not taking her fighting career seriously, but she’s actually a really solid flyweight on her day. She’s got an excellent chin and solid cardio to complement a decent wrestling game. The 34 year old also has an impressive victory over Jasmine Jasudavicius and she’s only lost to solid names during her time under the UFC banner.

With that being said, we’re going with Cong here. Outside of the shocking loss to Gabriella Fernandes, “The Joker” has been superb since joining the UFC, seemingly improving with every subsequent fight. She throws and lands at a significantly higher clip than Cortez, while eating much less punishment in return and has excellent takedown defence.

Cortez has also never been much of a finisher, meaning that a Fernandes-esque stoppage out of nowhere doesn’t seem to be a huge possibility here. If anything, Cong’s power and striking acumen from an extensive Muay Thai career means that she looks to be much more of a potent finishing threat than the American.

We have yet to see Cong triumph over an opponent of this calibre, but she’s riding a wave of momentum following three straight victories. By contrast, Cortez is coming off a decisive loss in her last appearance. She could show up with a point to prove as a result, but I still like Cong to score the decision after a dominant showing on the feet.

Prediction: Wang Cong to win by decision
