Cody Garbrandt: What does "No Love" have left in the tank after an exceedingly underwhelming victory last time out?

Once pegged as the future of the bantamweight division after an iconic title winning performance over Dominick Cruz, it’s hard to believe just how badly Cody Garbrandt (15-7) has fallen off. “No Love” is 4-7 with a slew of brutal stoppage losses since winning the belt and hasn’t beaten a decent opponent since flatlining an aging Raphael Assuncao all the way back in 2020. Garbrandt’s early success was built on his boxing, but his terrible defence and sub-par fight IQ has cost him dearly on more than one occasion. He’s coming off a controversial victory over Long Xiao in his last fight, a contest that he would have lost clearly were it not for two wince-worthy low blows that left him retching into a bucket.

Adrian Yanez: Will Yanez rebound following a disappointing result last time out and score the biggest win of his career?

Five consecutive victories with five performance bonuses and four finishes had many raving about Adrian Yanez (17-6-1) as a future title contender at 135 pounds. A slick striker with a deadly boxing game, Yanez’s finish heavy introduction to the promotion earned him instant fan favourite status among the UFC hardcores. Unfortunately for the Texan, his surge towards the top of the rankings was halted by a brutal KO loss to Rob Font, and he’s fallen on rough times since then. Yanez is just 1-2-1 since that defeat, although those results arguably don’t tell the full story. He was decisively finished by Jonathan Martinez, but he was unlucky not to get the nod against Daniel Marcos in defeat and Ricky Simon in an egregiously judged draw. Throw in a ferocious stoppage over Vinicius Salvador, and it’s clear that Yanez isn’t done just yet.

Cody Garbrandt vs Adrian Yanez prediction

With that greatest of respect, this is the end of the line for “No Love.”

Garbrandt looked absolutely dismal against Long Xiao. His output has fallen off a cliff and he doesn’t throw anything with conviction anymore. He also has atrocious defence, and he only won his last fight due to the Chinese fighter being deducted two points for groin shots. Xiao is a tough veteran, but he’s also 27-11 with just a single UFC victory. If the American wasn’t able to score a decisive victory there, I dread to think what Yanez is going to do to him.

While he’s unlikely to ever become the future champion that many once pegged him for, Yanez looks to have gained a second wind in his career. He looked excellent last time out against Ricky Simon, nearly scoring the stoppage in a fight where he was clearly robbed of a victory by poor judging. The American is an excellent boxer with a sharp jab and I think he’s going to put hands on Garbrandt in short order here.

Garbrandt comes out aggressive, chopping a few low kicks and emoting a couple of times, before getting backed up and folded up against the fence by the Texan somewhere in the first two rounds.

Prediction: Adrian Yanez to win by TKO
