Sean Brady: Brady looks to underline his credentials as welterweight's next title challenger
Undefeated outside of a TKO loss to former welterweight champion Belal Muhammad in 2022, Sean Brady (18-1) looks to be undeniable as the next title challenger at 170 pounds with a victory on Saturday night. A smothering wrestler with an elite jiu jitsu game and serviceable striking to boot, Brady is coming off the biggest win of his career. Scoring a submission victory over former champion Leon Edwards where he dominated “Rocky” from pillar to post in front of his home crowd, many thought that the Philadelphia native had done enough to earn a title shot there and then.
Michael Morales: Can the Ecuadorian score his seventh straight win in the promotion and vault the line into title contention?
Perfect across six fights since joining the promotion via DWCS in 2021, Michael Morales (18-0) has finally arrived in the title conversation at 170 pounds. Entering this contest off the back of successive first round finishes over Neil Magny and Gilbert Burns that earned him back to back Performance of the Night awards, the 26 year old Ecuadorian prospect looks set to become a mainstay of the division for years to come. A polished striker with legitimate power in his fists, Morales has only been to the judges’ scorecards on four occasions in his professional career.
Sean Brady vs Michael Morales prediction
This high stakes welterweight shown is likely to go one of two ways. Morales is going to clobber Brady with something monstrous and get him out of there early, or the American is going to take him down and twist him into a pretzel for the submission.
Out of the two scenarios, the latter would appear to be the more likely option. Morales has undoubtedly looked sensational in his last two fights, but Neil Magny and Gilbert Burns are far from the best that the 170 pound weight class currently has to offer. By contrast, Brady is coming off an absolutely dominant win over a man who was widely regarded as the best welterweight on earth as recently as last year.
Morales could conceivably upset the applecart here. He has superb takedown defense to go with his superb striking and Brady has been KO’d before by a considerably less powerful fighter in Belal Muhammad. However, Morales has never faced a grappler of the American's pedigree or relentless tenacity. It's also worth noting that while he has excellent wrestling defence on paper, he's defended all of his UFC takedowns against the mediocre likes of Max Griffin and Adam Fugitt.
Morales might be able to stuff the entries in the early goings but once Brady gets him to the floor, it’s difficult to envision an ending that doesn’t see the Ecuadorian tapping out. The pick is Brady by submission.
Prediction: Sean Brady to win by submission
