Malcolm Wellmaker: Undefeated knockout artist taking his biggest step yet
Malcolm “The Machine” Wellmaker (10-0) enters UFC 322 as one of the most explosive prospects in the entire bantamweight division — and arguably the UFC’s most promising up-and-coming talent. Riding a 16-fight winning streak across amateur and pro competition, Wellmaker has built his reputation on violent right-hook knockouts, sharp footwork, and an ability to set traps far beyond what his experience level suggests. His last two wins — first-round KOs of Cameron Saaiman and Kris Moutinho — showcased not only one-shot power but also a complete striking process built around feints, low kicks, and constant activity.
While his résumé doesn’t yet contain top-tier veterans, the manner of his victories has generated real hype. The knockout of Saaiman, in particular, stood out: Saaiman was once viewed as one of the division’s best young prospects, yet Wellmaker sent him flying across the Octagon with a perfectly-timed right hook. Beyond the highlight moments, his composure, defensive awareness, and shot selection have impressed observers who expected raw explosiveness but instead found a well-schooled, high-IQ striker.
Now taking the biggest step of his career, Wellmaker looks to prove that his skills translate against opponents with deeper experience and more complete games. If he continues to perform at this level, he could rapidly emerge as one of the UFC’s most dangerous new bantamweights.
Ethyn Ewing: The American looks to make an almighty splash on short notice
Earning a UFC call up on less than two days notice, former A1 Combat bantamweight champion, Ethyn Ewing (8-2), arrives in the promotion looking to play spoiler and score one of the most shocking upsets of the year.
Undefeated since beginning his professional career at 0-2, the 27 year old American is clearly not a fan of the scorecards, having scored seven finishes in eight wins. The CSW representative has produced knockouts in his last three fights, most recently melting Billy Brand with a monstrous punch in the first round to earn the aforementioned title less than a week ago.
Ewing makes his debut on extremely short notice with virtually nothing to lose, stepping in after Cody Haddon was forced to withdraw with a broken foot. As if the odds weren't stacked against him enough, he will also enter this contest on the wrong end of a slight edge in height and reach.
Malcolm Wellmaker vs Ethyn Ewing prediction
Fighting for the second time in the space of a week, Ewing must be commended for taking a fight against one of the UFC's more hyped prospects on less than a week's notice; few would step up to the plate in such circumstances. Unfortunately for the 27 year old, this is unlikely to be a decision that's going to age well.
The A1 Combat alum clearly has power, but that may actually work against him here. If his past fights are anything to go by, Ewing is going to march forward to try and land heavy hands on Wellmaker's chin early; a dangerous proposition when faced with a sniper of "The Machine's" power, timing, and accuracy. As such, it's easy to envision a reality where Wellmaker sets a trap with a subtle feint before proceeding to absolutely clobber Ewing with his trademark right hook coming in.
Unless the MMA gods have a seismic upset in store for us, this would appear to be the most probable outcome. Wellmaker has improved with every fight he's had in the UFC, and there's a valid argument to be made that the version who decimated Cameron Saimann in his first UFC fight would still send Ewing astral traveling in short order.
Prediction: Malcolm Wellmaker to win by KO
