This looks set to be a fierce three-set battle between world number 60 Zhizhen Zhang and former number 43 Brandon Nakashima meet for the first time. 22-year-old Nakashima has endured a woeful second season after such a successful 2022 but he conceded just two games to an out-of-sorts Holger Rune on Friday to claim back-to-back wins on tour for only the third time since winning the Next Gen ATP Finals last November. 26-year-old Zhang is enjoying the form of his career this season, with April’s incredible run to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open seeing two top 10 upsets over Taylor Fritz and Cameron Norrie, and he came back from a set down to beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry to become the first Chinese player to reach the third wound of the Shanghai Masters. The Asian Games gold medallist looks the favourite here backed by a partisan home crowd but Nakashima’s rugged best is bubbling under the surface and ready to burst any day now. Back Zhang to earn at least a set inside an accumulator or take the Chinese to make further history by reaching the last 16.
