THE PREDICTION

World number 75 Yulia Putintseva is capable of much better tennis than her current WTA world ranking suggests and she proved that on Sunday with a searing straight-sets victory over Marie Bouzkova. The 28-year-old is one of the more unpredictable performers on the WTA tour, with more troughs than peaks this season, and next opponent Caroline Garcia is certainly included in that category to make this a real coupon buster. World number 10 Garcia appears to be finding her feet again after a woeful summer but this will be a much bigger test than her straight-sets opener over Kateryna Baindl on Monday. The 29-year-old’s last two defeats have come at the hands of in-form Maria Sakkari to suggest she will take some beating and she beat Putintseva in straight sets in their first tour-level encounter back in April. Backing Garcia to win outright is a sensible concession to make against Putintseva, who has momentum from qualifying.
