THE PREDICTION
World number 36 Anhelina Kalinina grabbed the biggest ranking win of her career with a shock three-set result over second seed Aryna Sabalenka, although her opponent had endured a tragic week off the court. The Ukrainian may have mixed feelings over the win, symbolic for her war-torn country on the one hand but sparing a thought for the individual, and that could well take some of the shine off of what is an excellent milestone after a tough period on hardcourts.
World number 68 Yulia Putintseva is another surprise round of 16 entrant after overcoming lucky loser Greet Minnen in an encouraging win on Sunday. The 29-year-old is capable of far better tennis than her current deflated ranking suggests but back-to-back runs to the round of 16 at Masters events, after losing to Iga Swiatek at Indian Wells this stage last week, is very surprising for the erratic Kazakh. Putintseva beat Kalinina to lift her Budapest open title in 2021 but the Ukrainian returned the favour in three sets on grass two years ago to make this first hardcourt encounter a tough call. Back Putintseva to earn at least a set, with more consistent results this month, to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
