24-year-old Yu Hsiou Hsu will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 166th after a three set victory over in-form Max Purcell on Wednesday. Hsu qualified well to make his Masters debut in Shanghai and there is the slightest whiff of an upset on the cards here against world number 18 Lorenzo Musetti, who is far from his best in these conditions. 21-year-old Musetti reached the round of 16 at Roland-Garros for a second time in three seasons to prove his credentials as one of the most naturally gifted on the slower surface on tour but he has been erratic at best on hardcourts this season, with last week’s victory over Karen Khachanov at the Beijing Open as much about his opponent’s recent title victory as his own merits. The Italian should still be coming through this opener in straight sets in Shanghai but backing Hsu to earn at least a set, outside of an accumulator, could be the shrewd move.
