THE PREDICTION
World number 128 Sofia Kenin played like the Grand Slam champion she is on Monday, in a thrilling three-set victory over Coco Gauff. The 24-year-old won the Australian Open in 2020 and then finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek at Roland-Garros later that year before enduring several seasons of off-court issues, injuries and the lack of form that comes with it. Kenin has only recently begin to show flashes of returning to her former glory, at best brief, this season but it will be fascinating to see what Monday’s blockbuster victory will do for her confidence in the months to come. World number 73 Xinyu Wang conceded just four games to Storm Hunter in a relative mis-match on Monday. The 21-year-old has all the qualities required to thrive on this surface sooner rather than later and it would not be a total surprise to see Kenin’s level drop significantly after such an emotional outpouring but the American’s experience should come to her aid if this gets close.
Back Kenin beat Wang in the first round here two years ago and again at the Auckland Classic in January, both in straight sets, but the sensible call is taking her to win outright.
