THE PREDICTION

29-year-old Viktorija Golubic enjoyed her best season on tour last year and she enters the Australian Open at a career-high WTA world ranking of 40th as a result. The Swiss earned a Gold Medal alongside Belinda Bencic in the Women’s Doubles at the Tokyo Olympic Games last summer amongst her best form that also saw her reach two finals in Lyon and Monterrey but a quarter-final exit at Wimbledon was perhaps the most remarkable achievement. She takes on Shuai Zhang here with a 2-1 lead in their head-to-head record, their most recent meeting going Golubic’s way at the Guangzhou Open in 2019. Former world number 23 Shuai Zhang won both of her career titles at that tournament in 2013 and 2017 and she remains a threat on the WTA singles tour, although this campaign will likely be more about her partnership with best friend Sam Stosur after they won the US Open last season. In any case, Golubic should have enough to come through the outright winner here.
