THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka came back from a set down to beat Ana Bogdan on Monday in a really tight encounter. The 32-year-old won back-to-back Australian Open titles in 2012 and 2013 but she has reached the quarter-finals three times here, and the semi-finals back in 2013. Azarenka has lost to top quality opposition on clay in recent weeks, Amanda Anisimova at the Madrid Open and eventual champion Iga Swiatek last time out in Rome, and she should have more than enough to oust fellow tour veteran Andrea Petkovic. The 34-year-old made short work of Oceane Dodin in the first round but she has not managed to win back-to-back matches since the opening tournament of the season and she trails Azarenka 3-1 in their head-to-head after a straight-sets defeat at last season’s Berlin Open. ‘Petko’ did claim their only meeting on tour, though, so backing Azarenka to win outright is the sensible move.
