THE PREDICTION
World number 11 Veronika Kudermetova overcame fellow WTA Finals Women’s Doubles champion Elise Mertens in straight sets on Wednesday to put a poor showing at the Australian Open behind her. The 25-year-old was one of the most consistent high-performers last season but she often struggled to make it count in the latter stages of tournaments, with more titles surely her main target for 2023. Fellow Russian Liudmila Samsonova will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 18th after upsetting in-form Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets on Thursday. The 24-year-old claimed three of her four WTA titles late last season after bursting into form on the hardcourt swing and it could be that cutting-edge that makes the difference in key moments here. Kudermetova leads Samsonova 2-1 in their head-to-head record after a three-set tussle at the Berlin Open last summer but back Samsonova to earn at least a set, just as she did then, and leave the victor up to chance.
