THE PREDICTION
25-year-old Ugo Humbert has successfully fought himself back from a horrendous 2022, with Tuesday’s victory over Marcos Giron seeing the Frenchman likely break his career-high ATP world ranking of 25th set in January last season. Humbert was consistently troubling the likes of Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas before contracting covid-19 at the Australian Open last year totally derailed his progress and there is little doubt that he has the talent to break inside the top 10 next season if he can build on this momentum. World number nine Alexander Zverev had to fight back from a set down to Marton Fucsovics in a predictably slow start to his Paris Masters campaign but the German is fighting for a place at the incoming ATP Finals, of which he is a two-time champion, and he should be improved in time for this likely thriller.
Humbert beat Zverev in three tight sets en-route to the Halle Open title two years ago in their only previous encounter and taking him to earn at least a set here, fiercely backed by a partisan crowd in Paris-Bercy, seems a reasonable way to avoid a result.
BETTING TIP: Ugo Humbert to win a set.
