THE PREDICTION

23-year-old Tomas Machac will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 43rd after enjoying his best run on tour so far, beating Matteo Arnaldi in straight sets on Tuesday to back-up excellent results over Andrey Rublev and Andy Murray. The Czech should take no fear into this huge first meeting with world number three Jannik Sinner, who has dropped a rare set this week to Tallon Griekspoor, and he should garner plenty of the early support as an impressive up-and-comer with a game well-suited to these conditions.

22-year-old Sinner steadied the ship against Griekspoor before a solid straight-sets victory over Christopher O’Connell on Tuesday to suggest he can emulate his best showing in Miami, twice a runner-up here to Hubert Hurkacz in 2021 and to Daniil Medvedev last season. The Italian has not lost to a player ranked outside the top 20 since Dusan Lajovic at the Cincinnati Masters last August – and that was in large part due to the emotions of winning a first Masters title in Toronto the week before. Back Sinner to win outright, with Machac playing well enough to warrant caution.

TIP: JANNIK SINNER TO WIN
