Former world number 20 Guido Pella made the main draw of Indian Wells on a protected ranking as he currently sits outside the top 700 on tour after a long absence through injury. The 32-year-old is probably the better player of the two here on a hardcourt but he has struggled to impose himself on tour since his latest return from injury and world number 78 Thiago Monteiro has enjoyed some strong recent wins, not least over former world number three Dominic Thiem. A run to the quarter-finals of the Chile Open last week saw three three-set matches eventually run away from the Brazilian but it seems likely that he can earn at least one here in a match that could well need a decider. Back Monteiro to win at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
