World number 71 Thiago Monteiro lost in tight straight sets to Matteo Berrettini in Brazil’s opening United Cup defeat to Italy but the 28-year-old now faces a huge opportunity to pull off something special. Brazil took a 2-0 lead over Norway on Saturday thanks to star player Beatriz Haddad-Maia and Felipe Meligeni Alves, meaning just one victory on Day 4 would be enough to grab the tie and Monteiro will never have a better chance at beating world number three Casper Ruud than at this moment. 24-year-old Ruud enjoyed the biggest year of his impressive career so far in 2022, finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal at Roland-Garros and to Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open, but his form took a serious depreciation towards the end of the year before rising again in time to finish runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the ATP Finals. Ruud has beaten Monteiro in straight sets in both of their previous meetings and he remains the solid favourite to get Norway on the board here but back him as outright winner in this first competitive match of his new season.
