THE PREDICTION

California native Marcos Giron set a career-high ATP world ranking of 44th after an excellent few weeks on US hardcourts, first finishing runner-up to Tommy Paul at the Dallas Open before a semi-final exit in Delray Beach. The 30-year-old also made the last four of the Tokyo 500 last October to suggest he was building something special and this looks a solid opportunity to produce a career-best run in conditions that should suit his robust game. World number 99 Thanasi Kokkinakis is a player capable of much better tennis than his current ranking suggests but he has struggled to find any sort of rhythm over the past two or so years. The 27-year-old enjoyed his best run for some time with a quarter-final exit to Alexander Zverev at the Los Cabos Open two weeks ago but Giron’s form suggests this is the American’s to lose – particularly as Kokkinakis’ huge forehand may be a little softened in the desert. Giron has needed top 20 opposition to oust him from his last three tournaments so back the perennial underdog to edge through here.

TIP: MARCOS GIRON TO WIN
