THE PREDICTION

World number 94 Thanasi Kokkinakis’ aim this season should be breaking the top 40 on tour for the first time as he is clearly good enough to do so. The 26-year-old won his maiden ATP title on home soil in Adelaide last year and he came close to defending it this year before a three-set defeat to Roberto Bautista Agut but his best tennis came in an incredible five-set epic against Andy Murray at the Australian Open, where he took the first two sets before eventually losing in the small hours of the following morning. World number 193 Brandon Holt suffered a similar fate to the aforementioned Bautista Agut in the second round as he also lost from two sets up in Melbourne and he has failed to win a match since. Kokkinakis’ three-set defeat to Borna Coric last time out on tour in Dubai last week is testament to his improving powers and he qualified the hard way this week to look the strong favourite against wildcard Holt. Home advantage favours the Californian native but back Kokkinakis to win the crowd around with a straight-sets victory.
