THE PREDICTION
Both world number 54 Magda Linette and number 77 Taylor Townsend are capable of top 30 tennis at their best but this is a really tough call on Wednesday between two players desperately seeking form. 27-year-old Townsend will at least enjoy the support of adoring home fans who are equally desperate to see her do well on US soil but she has struggled to replicate her excellent doubles results in her soli game in recent months. 32-year-old Linette is clearly suffering a crisis in confidence on court after so many tight defeats to top players this season, coming off the worse in lengthy battles with Ekaterina Alexandrova, Beatrix Haddad-Maia and Qinwen Zheng to suggest there is a semblance of form simmering beneath the stress. The Pole enjoyed one of her brief bright periods last March to make the last 16 in Miami but recent results say this is Townsend’s to lose with the freedom to enjoy the occasion more. Back the American to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
