World number five Fritz is the defending champion at Indian Wells after coming of age here last season and he has since added three more titles at Eastbourne, Tokyo and last month’s Delray Beach Open as one of the better performers over the last 12 months. 20-year-old Shelton came into his Masters debut at a career-high world number 41 after producing a stunning run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on his very first trip away from the United States. A straight-sets victory over Fabio Fognini on Thursday is a solid start to his campaign that also snapped a three-match losing streak since his famous run in Melbourne and he should be the better for it in this first meeting with Fritz. Crowd support is likely to favour the young underdog here and that could get to Fritz as the defending champion but the elder American is a his best with the pressure firmly on.
