THE PREDICTION
World number nine Taylor Fritz enjoyed a comfortable victory over Jiri Lehecka on his United Cup debut before joining forces with Jessica Pegula to make it 4-1 over Czechia. The 25-year-old won the Diriyah exhibition in December in a promising continuation of his excellent late-season form in what was by far his best year on tour and he looks set to keep hold of his top 10 ranking for the foreseeable future. Former world number two Alexander Zverev lost his first tour-level match since June to Lehecka in one of the first real shocks at the United Cup. The German, also 25, has often struggled to provide his best tennis on the international stage but he should be the better for a stinging defeat and eager to make amends. Zverev beat Fritz in straight sets this time last season at the ATP Cup to take a 4-2 lead in their head-to-head record but back Fritz to avenge that here.
