THE PREDICTION
27-year-old Tallon Griekspoor comes into his Shanghai Masters debut at a career-high ATP world ranking of 24th after enjoying an excellent season on tour. The Dutchman won his maiden ATP title at the Pune Open at the start of the season and never really dropped that level until the clay swing, riding out a few months before claiming his second ATP title on home soil at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in June. World number 55 Dusan Lajovic stunned Stan Wawrinka in straight sets on Wednesday to get a strong foothold in at the Shanghai Masters and it was only recently that the Serb , often thought of as purely a clay-courter, upset Jannik Sinner at the Cincinnati Masters in August. Griekspoor took Sebastian Korda to three sets before defeat at the Astana Open last weekend and other than his surprise win over Frances Tiafoe at the Davis Cup Group Stages it could be argued he is struggling to put matches away right now. Five of Griekspoor’s last six matches have needed a deciding set, including a first round exit at the US Open, to suggest backing Lajovic to win at least a set off the back of a big win is the shrewd move here.
