THE PREDICTION
World number six Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Rinky Hijikata handily on Saturday to open his Shanghai account but the Greek will have to be near his best in this enticing clash with Ugo Humbert. Former number 25 Humbert won both of their first two encounters before Tsitsipas was able to return the favour in their most recent match at the Canada Masters in 2021 and all three of those matches fell in three tight sets, with five tiebreaks out of nine sets played. 25-year-old Humbert endured a horror season last year to fall away from this level but he has fought hard in 2023 to bring himself back into contention against the likes of Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev, who beat the Frenchman in three tight sets in Beijing last week as a strong marker for his progress. Tsitsipas, also 25, is certainly still more vulnerable than he would like to be, certainly than he would like to let on, and Humbert will be desperate to win here as a real statement piece for his season of recovery. Back the Frenchman to earn at least a set and consider adding at least a tiebreak to leave the ultimate result up to chance.
