THE PREDICTION

World number seven Stefanos Tsitsipas avoided a potential banana skin with an impressively assured straight-sets result over former number three Milos Raonic on Monday. The 25-year-old won his 10th ATP title at the Los Cabos Open earlier this month, a first on an outdoor hardcourt, but defeats to Gael Monfils and Hubert Hurkacz in Toronto and Cincinnati were poor for a player of his level. The Greek finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open back in January, his second runner-up place to the Serb after losing the 2021 Roland-Garros final from two sets up, but he has never made it past the third round here in a New York in a rather damning late-season statistic. 21-year-odl Dominic Stricker came through qualifying well before an eye-catching four-set win over in-form Alexei Popyrin on Monday. The current world number 128 looks a Swiss star of the future and it would not be a surprise to see him challenge Tsitsipas throughout this biggest match of his career.

Tsitsipas beat Stricker in straight sets on grass last summer and he should be coming through this in similar fashion. However, taking the Greek to win outright is the suitably sensible concession for an accumulator and that makes taking the Swiss to snatch at least a set tempting.
