THE PREDICTION
World number 37 Alexander Bublik is one of the more unpredictable players on tour and it is almost impossible to tell how he will kick off his 2023 season. Kazakhstan need a point from this exciting clash with Switzerland after losing both singles matches on Thursday and Bublik, on paper, looks the man for the job after beating Wawrinka in both of their encounters this year, most recently, admittedly, by an early injury to the Swiss. Former world number three Wawrinka is certainly approaching the twilight of his career but the 37-year-old was clearly enjoying just being able to play at the end of 2022 after so many years tussling with injuries. He was forced to retire against Bublik in the semi-finals of Metz after stunning Daniil Medvedev in the round of 16 and he also beat Casper Ruud at Basel en-route to a creditable quarter-final exit to Roberto Bautista Agut. Much of this match depends on what version of Bublik turns up but, then again, all matches involving the maverick Kazakh should be treated with caution. Back Bublik to earn at least a set with the conditions favouring his kamikaze service game.
