THE PREDICTION

Former world number three Stan Wawrinka claimed his only Masters title at the Monte-Carlo Open back in 2014, the same season he won his first of three Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open. Two of the Swiss’ three majors came on hardcourts in Melbourne and, most recently, in New York two years later and he has enjoyed his tennis on the surface in recent months as he aims to make a full recovery from surgery. How far the 37-year-old can climb remains a mystery but the current world number 100 should fare well in this first meeting with world number 186 Aleksandar Vukic, who has struggled on tour so far this season. The Aussie qualified well enough to make his second appearance at Indian Wells but Wawrinka reached back-to-back quarter-finals on hardcourts last month and he can be backed to win in straight sets here.
