THE PREDICTION

31-year-old Sloane Stephens moved back up to world number 33 after claiming her eight WTA title at the Rouen Open last week, bringing a huge amount of positivity and encouraging clay-court results into the business end of the swing. The American claimed her Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2017 but she finished runner-up to Simona Halep at Roland-Garros the following summer and she has always looked her best on this surface. Consistency has been Stephens’ biggest foe in the last four or five seasons but she is an undeniable talent in these conditions who can beat anybody on her day.

Similar could be said for former number 18 Martina Trevisan, who is certainly one of the more specialised clay courters on tour. The Italian beat Naomi Osaka in Rouen last week before defeat to Anhelina Kalinina but, like Stephens, she is well capable of bursting into her best form on her favoured surface. Back Stephens to earn at least a set on form but this match should be kept far from any promising accumulators.
