THE PREDICTION

Former world number three Sloane Stephens takes on former number four Caroline Garcia in what should be a thrilling clash between two of the most talented but highly erratic players on the WTA tour. 30-year-old Garcia will receive the full support of a partisan home crowd here in Rouen and she has impressed since choppy opener over Elisabetta Cocciaretto, apparently putting whatever injury was hampering her in Miami last month and more recently in defeat to Emma Raducanu at the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers last weekend.

Both Garcia and Stephens are probably at their best on clay but 31-year-old Stephens has claimed the better results on the surface, finishing runner-up to Simona Halep at Roland-Garros in 2018 and claiming the Charleston 500 in 2016. The American coasted past in-form Yue Yuan on Friday to look a genuine contender here for the first time this week but Garcia leads their head-to-head 5-3 and she won their only previous encounter on clay in Rome back in 2018. Back Garcia to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance. Three of their last four matches have seen sets go both ways.

TIP: CAROLINE GARCIA TO WIN A SET
